Librarians and Library Media Specialists

Librarians and library media specialists work in libraries and other industries that need information organized (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2025a). Librarians often work in public, school, or specialized libraries (corporate, law, or medical). They usually need a master’s degree in library science or information studies. Sociology is good preparation for the master’s degree in library science. The median annual pay for librarians and library media specialists is $64,300 or $31 per hour. Postsecondary Teachers

Postsecondary teachers teach in colleges and universities (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2025b). They specialize in their area of instruction and generally must have a degree higher than their students have. A master’s degree is sometimes sufficient, especially at two-year colleges. A Ph.D. is usually required to teach at a four-year college or university. The median annual salary for postsecondary teachers is $84,000 per year. School and Career Counselors and Advisors

School and career counselors and advisors help students figure out an academic plan to match their goals after graduation (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2024c). They work in elementary, middle, and high schools, colleges, and as career coaches outside school settings. A master’s degree in counseling or psychology is usually needed for this occupation. A degree in sociology is good preparation for master’s level work in these fields. The median annual pay for school and career counselors and advisors is $65,100 or $31 per hour.
