10.3b6 Transnational Movement

Many social movements are also transnational in that they exist in multiple countries. Transnational movements may be collectively or locally organized but share similar goals. Social movements that look to protect and improve the environment exist all over the world. Their exact goals and strategies for achieving success may vary. For example, groups from multiple countries may come together to file a lawsuit. One recent lawsuit was filed in South Africa on behalf of the Vukani Environmental Movement, along with groundWork and African Climate Alliance, a transnational organization. They successfully won a lawsuit, which prevented the construction of new coal-fired power plants in South Africa (African Climate Alliance, 2024). In this example, a local social movement organization and two transnational organizations pursued shared goals.
