In addition to his contributions to the sociology of religion (see Chapter 3), Émile Durkheim’s (1858-1917) theories are also foundational to the study of deviance and crime. He wondered what kept society together and what conditions a social group needed for social solidarity to exist because deviance could threaten social solidarity.
